Lidl Milbona Light

Meh... protein I guess

This was my third attempt at reviewing this Cottage Cheese after a series of mishaps conspired to prevent me from doing so previously. If you buy your own supy of cottage cheese label it VERY carefully in big letters so no one else snaffles it. Starting in an unusual place today: I don't usually have too much to say about the actual design of the cottage cheese tubs as they're mostly fairly standard. Blue or white, with a supermarket logo and the words cottage cheese, often with a photo of come cottage cheese in some appealling format such as a CC salmon open sandwich.

Lidl's Milbona light (and the regular Milbona too I beleive) have no real front cover to their packaging aside from the lid. I noticed this when trying to get a photo for the website. Even where it has a small printed logo it is just above a large barcode. As you can see in the photo above, I have gone for a photo of the lid thather then the tub itsself. TLDR: the aesthetics of the packaging could do with a revamp. Whilst we're commenting on the packaging I will say I like the metal lid. There may be a slight risk of cutting yourself and I would prefer a hard plastic lid as well, but it is certainly better than the flimsy, thin lids offered up by the likes of Asda and Waitrose. With that out the way, lets get on to the cheese itself! Now I'm thinking that I must have had a blocked nose on this day as the overwhelming flavour I got from this was bland nothingness. I just wanted something more. Now you know I'm not the biggest fan of sour and tangy cottage cheeses but there is a nice middle ground which can be acheived- which this didn't do. It may not always taste like this but as a reviewer I can only go based on what I taste the day of my review. The texture of Lidl's Milbona cottage cheeses has always been more like that of a pot cheese, drier and crumblier; something which I'm not a huge fan of, but also something which makes it more difficult to eat large quantities of. It almost feels like a dessicant in the mouth.

One of the big benefits I will flag with this cheese is the protein content. Now cottage cheese is high in protein anyway but this is the highest so far, at 12.4g per 100- 37.2g per per tub a very nice statistic. Calorie wise it does only contain 69 calories per 100. If you you're looking for high levels of protein and satiety on a calorie budget I'd reccomend it. If you're just a casual consumer looking for a tasty snack or lunch I would probably look elsewhere for the best cottage cheese. Though this is passable and may pair well with bread as it won't make it so soggy as other CC's do. Overall I will give Lidl's Milbona a 4/10.
